Ĭharacters : Jane is married to and FBI agent and has an 18 month old daughter that she clearly loves, but is willing to leave with her mother so she can fly to Wyoming at the drop of a hat to search for her missing friend. But with people hunting her and Jane back at home in Boston, she has to survive long enough to get out of the valley and find help. Now alone, with her travel companions now dead and Kingdom Come burned to the ground, Maura knows that there is more to the village’s story that she ever imagined.

With Jane’s insistence that she knows Maura’s character, the investigation continues, until Jane returns home with a charred body from a car wreckage that is believed to be Maura’s. Jane immediately flies to Wyoming, ignoring the local police’s assumption that she has just taken off with a man for some … well, ‘alone time’, and forgotten to call. Meanwhile, Jane, still in Boston, doesn’t think anything of her friend’s seeming inability to answer her phone, until Maura isn’t on her flight home, and no one has heard from her in two days. With meals left on the tables, pets left to stave and a pool of dried blood at the bottom of the stairs, Maura begins to put together the pieces: this town was not simply vacated for the winter, something horrific has happened. When vehicle trouble leaves them little choice but to venture down a private road in knee deep snow in search of help, they enter the valley of Kingdom Come, a small village with two rows of houses, seemingly abandoned. Without letting anyone know the change in plans, they set off, to what will be the most dangerous trip any of them have ever taken. Plot Summary: While in Wyoming for a conference, Maura makes the first impulsive decision of her life: to join an old college friend and his companions on a trip out to a ski lodge on the last day of her stay. For those who have no idea what that means, it’s smart and cleaver, but it’s never funny. Parrish’s ‘South of Hell’ and Jeffery Deaver’s only book with a female lead, ‘The Sleeping Doll’, with a plot similar to P.J. The Killing Place, book 8 in the Rizzoli and Isles series, might be a strange place to start, but it dealt with my three favourite things: isolation, the unknown, and survival. Ten years older, and ten years more serious, the women seem to keep each other at arm’s length, compared to their touchy-feely TV counterparts.
